Overview

The course aims at improving students’ B2 level language proficiency. By the end of the course students: a) Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. b) Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. c) Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The course also intends to raise students' awareness of the principles underlying language teaching and of the different descriptors of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (adults vs children). It also intends to show them some teaching activities aimed at children in the first years of primary school.

Course contents

The course aims at consolidating and extending students' knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary (level B2), in particular, through the analysis of written and oral texts. It also intends to show students how to plan effective learning activities (flashcards, action songs, nursery-rhymes, picture books) for primary school students aged 6-8 years old.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons and group activities.In particular, the course combines activities aiming at improving students’ listening and reading skills and knowledge of grammar to B2 level, and activities aiming at developing strategies to teach English in the early grades of primary school.

Assessment methods

Final written exam on the course topics.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will demontrate:
- knowledge, understanding and awareness of the morphological, syntactic and lexical structures of the English language (level B2) and of the teaching activities and materials to introduce English in the early grades of primary school.
- capacity to apply the language skills (level B1) acquired during the course and to integrate them with the strategies and materials to teach English in the early grades of primary school.
-Make judgements on and assess their language skills and the language skills of primary school pupils; evaluate and select appropriate materials and tasks to be proposed in the classroom.
- Capacity to discuss, argue and choose the appropriate activities to teach English in the early grades of primary school, relying on the language competences acquired during the course.
Capacities to continue learning: strategies for the acquisition of English according to CEFR levels and their application to the didactics of English in the early grades of primary school, in a continuous learning perspective.
