Teachers
Overview
Increasing students’ reading comprehension skills with particular reference to texts frequently found in their field, in addition to developing their oral comprehension (general English) and speaking skills. Bringing students’ level of English to a full B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Admission requirements
Students must have passed the Laboratorio di Inglese I exam.
Course contents
Reading comprehension the student will learn to read texts regarding pedagogical issues
Lexis students will learn vocabulary commonly related to the above readings
Listening the student will acquire a better understanding of dialogues and monologues in informal and neutral settings on a range of everyday topics
Speaking: the student will learn to initiate and maintain conversation on familiar or personal interest topics, as well as narrate a simple story to Primary School children in English.
Students may be exempt from Laboratorio II if they are in possession of one of the following:
- International B2 Certificates not more than 5 years old: e.g. First Certificate in English (FCE); IELTS 5.5, IELTS 6.5; Trinity college London ISE II (grades 7, 8, and 9),TOEFL with a score of 500 or higher (for a full list of accepted certifications please contact the teacher).
Teaching methods
Teacher-centred lessons, combined with pairwork and group activities. In particular, the course includes activities aimed at improving listening and speaking interaction skills, and expanding vocabulary related to English language teaching in primary schools. Extra materials are posted on moodle-dolly. Exercises re assigned and corrected in the classroom as well as mock exams
Assessment methods
The Laboratorio di Inglese II exam is both written and oral. The student must demonstrate his/her ability in listening and speaking skills at B1 level. In addition, the student must be able to tell a short story in English.
Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: the ability to understand articles related to English language teaching in primary schools, and the ability to understand the main points in standard spoken English at B1 level on familiar matters at school, leisure, the main points of many radio or TV programmes or topics of personal or professional interest
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: the ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course (B1) to understand teaching materials, and developing conversational skills in the classroom.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS: the ability to self-correct and to assess their own language ability as well as the language skills of primary school pupils.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: the ability to discuss in English, with precise terminology and with appropriate language.
LEARNING SKILLS: strategies for consolidating and improving their English for English language teaching in primary schools with a view to lifelong learning.
