Course contents

The course (of 3CFU) is taught in the first semester of the academic year and has a total duration of 24 hours divided into 12 weekly lectures. Each lecture includes theoretical knowledge and practical computer exercises entirely focused on Microsoft's Excel application.
After a brief description of how to use Excel and the user interface, the course includes the use, through numerous examples, of the main commands available in menus, formulas and functions for manipulating, processing (with queries and reports) and representing data, both in Tables and in Pivot Tables, mainly in the financial and economic fields.
Course topics in detail:
General description of Excel: folder, sheet, cell
Data types/formats: numbers, characters, special characters, strings, vectors, matrices and their peculiarities.
Definition of a table in Excel and integrity constraints.
Description and use of arithmetic, range, union, intersection and logical operators.
Formulas and functions: semantics and syntax
Absolute, relative and mixed references
Copy/cut and paste and autofill.
Analysis of data on Tables and Pivot Tables using menu functions and keyboard formulas/functions.
Ways of graphing data

Teaching methods

Lectures will be delivered exclusively in-person; this will allow the student to obtain constant feedback while performing the exercises in class and will enable them to overcome those operational difficulties that many have with the use of computers. Moreover, with this mode, one will gradually acquire those theoretical-practical skills necessary to achieve the planned objectives and pass the final exam. Class attendance, although not mandatory, is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of computer-based tests with multiple choice quizzes. Since it is an eligibility, the result may be eligible or ineligible.

Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and understanding: The lectures will provide the students with the ability to know the main key and advanced features related to spreadsheets. 2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding Through the practical lessons in the laboratory, the student will apply the knowledge introduced in spreadsheets managed by the Excel software application. 3. Making judgments The students will be able to discover and analyze data through a spreadsheet. 4. Communication skills The students will be able to produce reports and graphs about tabular dataset. 5. Learning skills The students will have a knowledge of the spreadsheets that will made them able to use these tools in other courses and in their professional lives.
