Overview
This course aims to provide an understanding of how the design and control of internal combustion engines affect performance, consumption, emissions and radiated noise.
For all the analyzed engine architectures, students will develop extensive expertise about fluid flows, fuel systems, thermodynamics and combustion with reference to the way these factors affect engine power, efficiency and emissions.
The course also covers the analysis of experimental data acquired during activities run in engine test cells.
The application of specific knowledge acquired will enable students to choose the optimal technical solution for different engine applications and critically analyze experimental data acquired by main sensors applied to the engine.

Teaching methods
The course includes: theoretical lectures delivered with the support of multimedia systems. Lecture material will be available by the end of the course.
Assessment methods
The final assessment consists in an oral examination. During such examination, students are required to answer 3 questions. To assess their understanding and application of the course content. The examination is passed if the student reaches at least the pass mark.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: Lectures provide students with the basic concepts of design, development and control of modern internal combustion engines. Understanding of such concepts enables the ability to develop and apply original ideas, even in the area of Research and Development.
Independent thinking: The theoretical knowledge acquired, together with the analysis of experimental data carried out with the support of the professor, promote the development of remarkable analytical and critical thinking skills, suitable for complex decision-making processes.
Learning skills: All the described activities enable students to develop necessary learning skills to broaden their knowledge of technical topics independently, with the aim of effectively promoting their integration in the labour market or access to further courses.
