Unit FEM Fundamentals and Chassis Design
Mechanical Engineering (lesson)
The course aims at giving an introductory overview of the structural design of an automotive chassis, with particular emphasis on classical design solutions and on the sizing of lightweight structure members.
Fundamentals of Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Design, Applied Mechanics and Machine Design. Fundamentals of Linear Algebra.
Automotive chassis architectures overview. Spatial beam structures theory compendium. Thin plate theory. Thin walled beams: load resultants, stresses, warping and Vlasov effect. The finite element method for the analysis of thin walled structures, from the bilinear Mindlin plate element to the solution of equilibrium equations. Joint modeling. Dynamic analysis of FE modeled structures: modal analysis and periodic load response. Buckling phenomena in support structures. Basic structural impact calculations. Numerical optimization methods and their application to chassis design.
Classroom lessons and computer lab exercises.
Oral exam including a computer lab exercise.
Adequate knowledge for the structural design of chassis components.
