Unit Automotive Electronic Systems
Related or Additional Studies (lesson)
The course is intended to provide the tools needed to deal with all the development phases of a basic electronic system, from the specs definition to the test of the prototype.
With reference to the Dublin descriptors, the objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
Acquiring knowledge and understanding: acquisition of the basic concepts of the basic circuit blocks present in modern automotive electronic systems with a particular focus on Circuits with Operational Amplifiers, Design of Signal Sources circuits, Basic Analog Filters and Non Linear Circuits, fundamentals of Signal Conditioning, ADC and DAC circuits, Basic DC/DC Converter topologies and Low Dropout Regulators, Digital logic, Basic Principles of most common automotive sensors and actuators, basic concepts about Closed Loop and Open Loop control systems in automotive.
Applying knowledge and understanding: using analytical techniques, appropriate design methodologies, circuit simulators and specific development environments, the student acquires the ability to analyze and design an electronic system.
Making informed judgments and choices: Ability to perform independently and according to their own experience design choices even in case of incomplete specifications; Ability to organize the development phases of a project (even complex), Ability to debug an electronic system.
Communicating knowledge and understanding: Ability to present design considerations related to projects (even complex) to both specialized and non-specialized people.
Capacities to continue learning: Ability to refine an effective individual/team study methodology allowing to solve practical design problems.
No pre-requisites are required even if Fundamentals of Electric Circuits Theory and Fundamentals of Control Theory can be helpful.
The lecture course will include an introduction to electronic systems using a black-box approach (0.5 CFU); Analysis of the basic Circuits with Operational Amplifiers and Negative Feedback concept (1 CFU); Design of Signal Sources and Basic Analog Filters (0.5 CFU); Non Linear Circuits (Rectifers/Clamps/Peak Detectors) (0.5 CFU); Signal Conditioning (0.5 CFU); Analog to Digital Converters & Digital to Analog Converters (0.5 CFU); DC/DC Converter and Low Dropout Regulators (0.5 CFU); Basic Principles of most common automotive sensors and actuators (1 CFU); Digital logic, both sequential and combinatorial (0.5 CFU); Closed Loop and Open Loop control systems with examples in automotive (0.5 CFU).
The possibility of integrations and modifications of this table of contents is forecasted, based on contingencies and students feedback.
Course teaching consists of upfront lectures aiming to give to the student the basic knowledges needed to design and realize a fully operating electronic system, with emphasis on coherence when dealing with design choices. Lectures are likely to be delivered in presence, however in line with the laws and regulations related to the COVID19 pandemic emergency. Attending the lectures is not mandatory. The lectures are delivered in English.
The exam will consist in an oral discussion (approximately 40 minutes) aimed at verifying the student's knowledge. The questions will target different topics among all those addressed in the lecture course. Mid-term exams are not forecasted (but an exam window during the lecture course will be opened for the students who attended the course in the previous years). It is possible that different exam methods will be adopted (e.g., written exam + oral integration) in the event of a very high number of students participating in the course.
