Overview

The course aims at supplying to the students the simplified analytical methods employed to evaluate the stress field in simple structures, with particular reference to beams.

Admission requirements

Basic knowledge of the contents of the mechanical drawing course and of the applied mechanics course.

Course contents

Composition of forces, elements of theory of elasticity, beam theory, internal forces, stresses. Solution of statically redundant structures.
Castigliano theorem, Virtual Work Principle, Betti theorem, Mohr theorem.
Thread analogy for drawing a qualitative bending moment in a beam.
Qualitative deformation of a frame.

Teaching methods

Classroom lessons with practical exercises.

Assessment methods

A written exam.

Learning outcomes

Adequate knowledge for designing beam-like structures.
