Overview

To provide basic knowledge of chemistry.

Admission requirements

Prerequisites: An open mind and the willingness to do the homework problems.
Prerequisites of chemistry: none.
Prerequisites of math: fluency in high-school algebra.

Course contents

1. Chemical system. Stoichiometry. Radioactivity. Basic physics. Atomic structure. Molecular structure. Chemical Bond. Basic thermodynamics.
Chemical and phase equilibria. Chemical kinetics. Electrochemistry.

Teaching methods

The basics of chemistry is presented in 2 steps: 1) From experiment to to theory and 2) from theory to new xepriments. The resolution of several problems is aimed to clarify the use of the theory presented. Lectures are of the chalk&blackboard-type and are constructed all along, giving so time to the student to follow them step-by-step.

Assessment methods

There are 2 wriiten exams, one at the end of the course on the material covered up to the first half of the course; the other about three weeks later, on the material covered during the second half of the course. Students who fail the written exams must pass an oral exam according to the academic calendar.

Learning outcomes

Students shall be acquainted with basic stoichiometry, pH, chemical thermodynamics.
