Overview

The course is given in English language. At the end of the course the student should be able to:• Define principles and methods to study sedimentary cyclicity, integrated stratigraphy, astrochronology for any type of professional and research application.
• Define chronological constrains using paleomagnetic, biostratigraphic and geochemical data in a sedimentary sequence.
• Elaborate of a chronological model to date a sedimentary sequence.
• Define limits and application of integrated stratigraphy methods in different contexts for palaeoclimate and palaeoenironment reconstructions.
• Direct application of integrated stratigraphy methods in the field in a marine and continental sequence.
• Correlate a sedimentary sequence measured in the field with a borehole measured in the laboratory.
• Rigorously present objectives, concepts and procedures of integrated stratigraphy data interpretation.
• Use computer to elaborate data, information and results.
• Present data and results in English language.

Admission requirements

Advisable to have followed the course “Sedimentology”. The course is intended for post-graduates with an in-depth knowledge of Earth Sciences.

Course contents

Principles and methods to study sedimentary cyclicity, integrated stratigraphy, astrochronology.
Excursions in the Northern Apennines and examination of cores in the laboratory: detailed description of sedimentary successions deposited in continental environments, evaporites, marginal marine.
High-frequency sedimentary cyclicity. Integrated stratigraphy for the identification of resources (water, hydrocarbons). The study of sedimentary successions for palaeoclimate and palaeoenironment reconstructions.
Final exam: oral

Teaching methods

Lectures, practical activities in the field, exercise in the sedimentology and stratigraphy laboratory, graphic rendering of the sedimentary structures; analysis of English scientific texts, writing and presentation of individual and group reports. The course language is English.

Assessment methods

The test is oral in English language and is aimed to assess the achievement of a sufficient level of knowledge / skills and application skills related to the expected learning outcomes (70%). It will also serve to evaluate overall transversal skills (30%): communication skills, independent judgment and learning ability. The final overall evaluation is expressed with a mark out of thirty. The evaluation consists of an oral test given in English language. The evaluation comprises analysis and interpretation of sedimentary sequences of interest for astrochronology studied through integrated stratigraphy. The oral exam takes place during the dedicated calendar time frames and the students should apply online using the EsseTre platform.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Through lectures the student learns: the theoretical principles of integrated stratigraphy and astrochronology; knowledge and interpretation of sedimentary sequences; information on the different methods for the interpretation of the evolution of the sedimentary basins using the principles of astrochronology.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
Through the field activities and the laboratory exercises the student directly applies the theoretical principles of integrated strtigraphy, acquiring the ability to describe and interpret and correlate sedimentary sequences.
Making judgments:
Through the graphics processing of sedimentary sequences and group discussion, the students learn to critically evaluate the data collection and the elaboration of interpretive hypotheses based on the principles of integrated stratigraphy and astrochronology.
Communication skills:
The drafting of a report and the public presentation of the scientific results allow the student to develop the ability to acquire systematic and solid communication skills, learning to critically discuss data and interpretaions.
Learning skills:
The described activities allow the student to gain a comprehensive approach and solid method for the discussion of complex scientific problems by providing the tools for a comprehensive work in an independent environment and within working groups.
Communication skills:
Clearly communicate the acquired knowledge and understanding skills.
Use correctly and appropriately the studied terminology, concepts and models.
