Knowledge of at least one foreign language (interactive lessons)
The course aims at providing the students with the basic language awareness and the communicative competence needed to understand popular and instructional disciplinary materials in writing, as well as to prepare presentations on familiar topics.
Students are expected to be at A2 level at the beginning of the programme
a) Basic English grammar and lexis. Exercises
b) Written exercises and basic terms of scientific language: readings from textbooks and popular science articles. Analysis and preparation of presentations summarizing the information presented in short specialized texts, based on information transfer.
The course will be developed as a practical language workshop. This involves students' participation in realistic communicative activities: tasks requiring students to understand and use specialized language in academic contexts. Students attending classes will be assessed in class.
Tests on 2 skills 1. Reading: written text from a textbook or website, with guided gap-fill questions (to test knowledge of vocabulary and grammar); 2. Reading exercise on a written text from a textbook or website, with open comprehension questions; 3. Preparation of 5 slides summarising the information given in a short specialised text, using information transfer.
At the end of the programme students will show at least a B1 competence in the written skills.
In particular they will show that:
- they are aware of the most common structures in English
- they can understand simple disciplinary texts taken from textbooks and popular articles
- they can complete notes for a presentation with the main points of a familiar text.
