Knowledge and practice of epidemiological methods to understand and evaluate health problems both for the individual and for the community.
Identification of factors that influence health and knowledge of principles and problems relating to disease prevention and risk prediction.
Knowledge of statistical methodology and application features in biomedical and epidemiological field.
Having familiarity with logic-conceptual and methodological tools to plane statistical surveys. Knowledge of the main statistical tests indexes.
Knowledge of computer systems and networks of health care organization.
Learning to formulate scientific research question and recovering right and relevant literature in the main online databases to answer the question formulated.
Collecting data to analyse them with statistical processing programs.
Characterizing and preparing data with any statistical health data processing program.
Know the ethical codes and the regulations governing the Ethics Committees. Knowing the governance structure of research in healthcare companies

Admission requirements

Basic knowledge of English.
Having proper knowledge of mathematics and computer science. Internet use.

Course contents

EPIDEMIOLOGY: General principles of epidemiological methodology. Interpretation and critical evaluation of epidemiological studies. Information flows of epidemiological interest. Screening methods and principles of clinical epidemiology. Emerging epidemiological problems in nursing and midwifery.
STATISTICS: Clinical questions. Introduction to randomized controlled trials. Concepts of randomization, blindness and selection of the control group. The concepts of risk and rate risk. The main measures of association. The survival curves. Interpretation of the confidence interval and statistical significance. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
IT: introduction to health computer science and computer security elements. Hospital information system. Health information systems.
METHODOLOGY OF LITERATURE SEARCH: definition, purpose and phases of literature search process. Formulation of a question and of a strategy research in nursing and midwifery area in the databases of Medline / PubMed. The structure and the general criteria for the search in databases: boolean operators, free text, Thesaurus and MeSH terms. Bibliographic citations.
DATA ANALYSIS IN HEALTH RESEARCH: illustration of healthy data collection techniques, coding and data entry, data recoding, univariate and bivariate analysis methods, and association indices. Using the PC for data analysis of nursing and midwifery interest.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, documentary analysis, individual and group work, interactive tutorials, network search, laboratory exercises. Traineeship. Use of visual teaching aids and computers.

Assessment methods

Presentation of a bibliographic research on a clinical or organizational question. Elaboration of a Project work on traineeship experience. Elaboration on health informatics issues. Written and / or oral exam.

Learning outcomes

The student knows general principles of epidemiology, statistical methodology and application aspects in biomedical and epidemiological fields. He knows the main indexes of statistical tests and the results of health research methods.
He knows information systems and health organization networks.
The student has the knowledge of logic-conceptual and methodological tools to program statistical surveys; he is able to recognize different types of research studies and to use bibliographical sources.
He has the ability to interpret and apply research results to practice nursing / midwifery and connect processes of research to the development of disciplines.
The student thanks to a knowledge of issues related to the methodology of health research and using different research instruments of statistical and epidemiological type can deal independently issues of health research.
The student through written and oral submissions is able to encode health interest data, to analyze tables, to draft bibliographies and to present them in an effective and concise way. He is also able to express concepts learned with appropriate language and to hold a discussion about the topics.
The student is able to update autonomously his skills constantly in relation to the context in which he operates by making use of methodological tools of health research.
