To know the fundamental rules and standards of mechanical drafting and drawings. To understand the role of mechanical drawings within the new product development process.
To be proficient in the assembly and part design and drafting respecting the main UNI-ISO standards.
To be able to understand the functional aspects and the manufacturing characteristics of some standard parts used in mechanical design.
To be proficient in the use of a 3D CAD system for modelling solid parts, assemblies and drawings. Knowing sketch creation commands, features modeling functionalities, construction of assemblies with the insertion of positioning constraints, drafting through the creation of views, sections, dimensions and annotations.
Elements of geometric representation, realization of orthogonal projections
Mechanical design and drafting and new product development. Unification and mechanical drawings standards. Orthographic projections, sections, conventional representations (1 CFU)
Dimensioning of mechanical parts, functional dimensioning. Roughness, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (2 CFU)
Solid modeling techniques, feature-based parametric modeling. Modelling of parts and assemblies in Solidworks (2 CFU)
Drafting functionalities in Solidworks (1 CFU)
Theory lessons and CAD training in Italian. Part of the supporting material is provided in English. Attendance is optional although recommended. Lessons may be available remotely both in synchronous (streaming) and asynchronous (recorded) mode if required by the evolution of the COVID19 situation.
The exam will take place at the end of the course according to the official exam schedule and consists of two technical-practical tests and an oral test. The first test, lasting 60 minutes, includes 6 multiple choice questions and / or exercises related to the concepts of mechanical drawing in general, tolerances and roughness The second test involves a CAD Solidworks modeling of a mechanical part. Then, the relative drafting model is to be realized. The time available is 2 hours. The student must demonstrate to be able to use CAD software methodically to produce 3D and 2D models that respect the rules of mechanical parts representation. The third test is an oral interview on all the contents of the course, carried out at the request of the student. The questions are aimed at assessing knowledge, the application of knowledge and autonomy of judgment. The first test provides a mark out of thirty, as well as the second. The exam is passed if both tests are sufficient. The final grade is the average of the first two tests. The oral exam integrates, positively or negatively, what was obtained in the first two tests. The first two tests are usually held on the same day. The results will be communicated no later than 10 days after the two practical tests; the publication will take place through Esse3 and the student will have a few more days available for the acceptance of the vote or the request to participate in the oral session. During the course there is an intermediate test which coincides with the 3D CAD modeling part. The student who passes the intermediate test will not carry out the relative part of the final exam. During all the tests it is possible to consult only mechanical drawing manuals and pages taken from standards. Tests could be carried out in presence or online remotely depending on the evolution of the COVID19 situation.
1) Knowledge and understanding:
- knowledge and understanding of theoretical foundations, normative and graphic language of the Industrial Technical Drawing, such as orthogonal projections, representation conventions, dimensioning, manufacturing tolerance prescriptions
- understanding the role of CAD in the product development process
- knowing the concepts related to the 3D modeling of solids and drawings
2) Applying knowledge and understanding:
- ability to interpret technical drawings of components, sub-assemblies and machines, ability to realize technical drawings of simple parts and mechanical components using dimensioned sketches
- be able to draw dimensioned sketches of components and assemblies following the international engineering drawing standards
- proficiency in the use a 3D CAD for modeling parts, assemblies and drawings of limited complexity
3) Making judgments:
- knowing how to correctly set up a mechanical drawing, choosing the views appropriately
- knowing how to devise an appropriate 3D CAD modeling strategy
4) Communication skills:
- knowing how to use vocabulary and appropriate terminology to present, in written or verbal form, the arguments and results of the study
5) Learning skills:
- be autonomous in the use of textbooks, standards and materials on the platform
- be autonomous in the use of a CAD software tool
