Teachers
Overview
The course has the double objective of:
-bringing the students to acquire the abilities to comprehend and use the English language and reach a level of communicative competence within the range of level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
-provide the students with the basic skills needed to use the English language in contexts that are relevant to the disciplinary areas of the Bachelor's degree program (Electronics, Mechanics, Information technology and Automation for Industry 4.0)
Admission requirements
Basic knowledge of English (A1/A2), critical thinking.
Course contents
Introduction to the basic concepts of technical English and specific thematic focus on the following topics:
• Energy, forms of energy and energy sources
• Work, power, electricity
• Machine tools and machining operations
• Mechanics and mechanisms
(2 CFU)
• Industry 4.0: the Fourth Industrial Revolution
• Technicians' skills for Industry 4.0
(2 CFU)
• Automated manufacturing and assembly
• Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
• Digital twins and robotics
(2 CFU)
Teaching methods
The course is taught in person. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is strongly suggested. The classes include: - teacher-fronted lessons, focused on the analysis of written texts and particularly of the linguistic structures that appear in them; - workshop activities focused on the comment of written texts and audiovisual materials; - workshop activities based on the methods of corpus linguistics, focused on the analysis of authentic materials selected by the teacher or chosen by the students based on their own interests. The course includes also recap sessions and mock-tests aimed at providing assessment in progress. The students’ active participation in class will be fostered. The course is taught in English, although Italian will also be used as a support to teacher-student communication in class as well as in the analysis of the linguistic structures.
Assessment methods
The final (written) exam has the following structure: Reading comprehension, assessing the ability to comprehend a specific written text; Use of English, assessing the knowledge of the morpho-syntactic structures and of specific vocabulary (basic physics and engineering, and Industry 4.0), and the ability to apply such knowledge; Writing, assessing the ability to write a short text (e.g., summaries of texts) on a specific topic that is relevant to the thematic areas covered in class. The time allowed for the exam is 3 hours.
Learning outcomes
COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE: the student must prove to be able to use the English language in contexts that are relevant to the to the disciplinary areas of the Bachelor's degree program, according to a B1 level of the CEFR.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO COMPREHEND: the student must prove to have gained the knowledge and ability to understand the linguistic structures, the ability to comprehend and analyze written and oral texts that are relevant to the specific disciplinary field of the degree program, according to the B1 level.
ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE: the student must prove to be able to critically apply the acquired knowledge, at the level of both the linguistic structures and the specific content (technical English).
