Overview

The course aims at providing fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for the understanding and analysis of phenomena and physical quantities related to classical mechanics, for the resolution of exercises and problems on issues addressed during the course
.
At the end of the course, the student will have to be able to:


• Understanding and analysing phenomena and physical concepts related to mechanics of points and rigid bodies.
• Solve exercises and problems concerning classical mechanics applying the knowledge acquired during the course.
• Correctly select methods and techniques necessary to solve problems/questions related to the arguments analysed during the course.
• Discuss in a clear, rigorous and concise way the concepts developed in the course.
• Explore autonomously some aspects of the subjects proposed in the course.

Admission requirements

Basic knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, linear algebra.

Course contents

The course will be held in the second semester of the first year. It consists of 54 hours of theoretical content (6 CFU). In addition, some hours will be dedicated to solving exercises. The contents below reported could be modified depending on contingent situations or starting from students feedback. The division in CFU is purely indicative.

-Part 1 (3 CFU, 27 hours)

Point-like mass
1) One-dimensional motion (velocity and acceleration).
2) Uniform velocity motion and uniform acceleration motion.
3) Two- and three- dimensional motions. The vectors.
4) The position, velocity and acceleration vectors.
5) Circular motion.
6) The motion of falling objects.
7) Inertial principle. Newton's laws.
8) Normal forces. Tension.
9) Frictional force.
10) Elastic force.
11) Linear momentum conservation.
12) Work done by a force.
13) Conservative forces. Potential energy and energy conservation.
14) Angular momentum and torque of a force.

Part 2 (3 CFU, 27 hours)

Rigid body
15) Moment of inertia.
16) Moment of inertia of uniform bodies: disk and sphere
17) Center of mass and translational motion.
18) Couple of forces.
19) Motion of the rigid body.
20) Equilibrium of the rigid body.

Teaching methods

The course will be delivered in presence (face-to-face lectures) using a virtual whiteboard (note that based on the evolution of the COVID19 situation, the course could be delivered remotely). The attendance is not mandatory but it is strongly recommended. The course is lectured in Italian. All the information, together with the teaching material, will be available on the Moodle and/or Teams platforms. Reception: by appointment obtained by e-mail.

Assessment methods

Written examinations with exercises and theoretical questions. The scope of the exams is to verify the capacity of the student to solve problems concerning mechanics of the point and of the rigid body and to discuss in a clear, rigorous and concise way the concepts developed in the course. Depending on the situation related to the COVID19 pandemic, exams will be performed in the classroom or by adopting the online modality. The exam duration is of 3 hours (1 hours 30 minutes in case of exam performed by adopting the online modality). The use of the calculator is permitted. The phone must be turned off. Results will be communicated within 2 weeks from the exam date. The vote will be published on the Esse3 platform. The evaluation of the exams is expressed in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a minimum grade of 18 out of 30.

Learning outcomes

Through the lectures and course materials provided through handouts, students will acquire the basic knowledge of kinematics and dinamics of the point and of the rigid body and will develop the ability of solving the related exercises.

In particular:

-Knowledge and understanding:
The student will develop the ability to understand and analyse the phenomena and the physical concepts related to classical mechanics.

-Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student will develop the ability to solve exercises and problems of mechanics of bodies, applying the knowledge acquired during the course.

-Making judgements:
The student should possess the ability to choose the appropriate method of analysis and solution of each kind of argument performed in the classes.

-Communicating skills:
The student will possess the ability to discuss in a clear, rigorous and concise way the concepts developed in the course.

-Learning skills:
The student will possess the ability to go deep by himself some aspects of the subjects proposed in the course.
